What to expect

Initial Consultation

Up to 60 mins consultation time

Prior to consultation:

  • Pre-appointment questionnaire to let us know your background and goals
  • Include your blood work if you have recent tests e.g. Lipid profile, HBA1C, iron levels etc
  • If your visit is gut-related, please bring a 7-10 day food and symptom/bowel diary. Check out the Free Downloads section for the template to use.

On the day

  • We will ask more questions as needed, analyse and give you clear advice to achieve your health outcomes and nutrition goals. Professional resources that support this will be emailed or hard copies given to you to take home.
  • We may recommend supplements or help you access funded supplements if you meet Pharmac funding criteria. Any prescriptions written by us may incur a $20 fee at your pharmacy. If this is an issue for you, we will ask your GP to write the script.
  • We will recommend any further diagnostic testing only if clinically indicated (funded by your GP or funded by you with our discount code through your local Awanui Lab). We don’t want you wasting your money on unnecessary and expensive testing.
  • We can provide meal plans, however our experience is that people eventually find these hard to follow and feel like it is ‘their fault’ for failing. We can provide examples of meal plans for a range of conditions, but our goal is also to help you feel confident in your knowledge for what is right for YOU.

 Review consultation

  • If we have started a medical nutrition therapy, such as low FODMAP, medication or supplement trial, it is important to have a review. We will re-look at your intake, symptoms and lifestyle, and recommend tweaks or the next steps.
  • Touching  base is also a great way to keep on track with your changes, and keep space for making sure you are achieving your nutrition and health goals.
  • We help problem solve and can dig deeper into CBT for managing complex behaviours around eating.

Dietitians have a special skill set – they are the only nutrition professionals registered under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act – which ensures they follow robust evidence-based medical nutrition therapy. This allows them to work in hospitals, where they understand more complex health conditions, disease progression, and outcomes. However, their training and ongoing competency education are deeply rooted in holistic, whole-person approaches to evaluating the credibility of nutrition science and helping people make change.
